Sarah Schulman, age 20, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with distinction from Stanford University in June 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology and a Master of Arts in Education Policy. She will pursue a Doctorate of Philosophy in comparative social policy at Oxford University next year as a Rhodes Scholar. Sarah is passionate about adolescent health. As a seven-year old tobacco sting-agent, she was introduced to the concepts of public health and prevention. Her 100% success rate purchasing tobacco products led Sarah to want to understand why young people would smoke in the first place. She founded the student-run organization, Youth Infusion (www.youthinfusion.com), to help youth-serving organizations empower and involve youth in decision-making processes .Through Youth Infusion, Sarah was exposed to the different ways in which adolescent health is organized at the state level. As an appointee to the Texas Department of Health’s Adolescent Health Advisory Committee, Sarah became familiar with the adolescent health coordinator position and understood its potential value. Her research on the adolescent health coordinator position was designed to enhance the position’s value and, in doing so, to help improve the health and well-being of her peers.
